10 – Basel Broadsheet, 1566 (detail from book cover) “This is from a broadsheet written by Samuel Coccius, ’student of the Holy Scripture and of the free arts, at Basel [Switzerland], in the Fatherland,’ in August 1566. He reports that on August 7 of that year, at the time of the sunrise, ‘many large black globes were seen in the air, moving before the sun with great speed, and turning against each other as if fighting. Some of them became red and fiery and afterwards faded and went out.’ As the illustration shows, this sighting was made in Basel. The dark colour of the Ufos may be due to their having been seen against the light of the rising sun. Some of them were bright and fiery. Their speed and irregular motion are typical Ufo features.” ~C.G. Jung, Flying Saucers, p. 95 (of course)

Ken James

Ken James is a diplomate Jungian psychoanalyst in private practice in Chicago, and the founder and director of The Soulwork Center, a Jungian-oriented resource center dedicated to facilitating the process of individuation as understood by the psychiatrist and philosopher C.G. Jung.

Dr. James is also the Director of Student Services at the University of Chicago Laboratory Schools, where he coordinates all services for students with learning, emotional and behavioral needs from ages 3 years through senior year of high school.

In addition to his psychoanalytic practice, he holds the rank of professor emeritus after a thirty-three year career as a university professor. Ken received his Ph.D. from Northwestern University in 1975, and his diploma in Analytical Psychology from the C.G. Jung Institute of Chicago in 1993. Ken did training in The Bonny Method of Guided Imagery and Music at the Institute for Consciousness and Music in Baltimore, Maryland in the late 1970s. He also did four years of post-doctoral study in theology and scripture at Catholic Theological Union in Chicago’s Hyde Park neighborhood in the early 1980s, and ended up teaching preaching there for a time.

He studied vocal music at the American Conservatory of Music, and appeared at Zanie’s Comedy Club, Court Theatre, and The Repertory Opera Theatre of Oak Park. He also performed flamenco with the Ensemble Español, under the stage name Francisco Santos. He has served on the faculty at Roosevelt University, Northeastern Illinois University, and Northwestern University. He has lectured and conducted workshops internationally on Divination and Synchronicity, Dream Interpretation, and The Tarot and its relationship to Jung’s psychology.

Ken’s spirituality draws from several sources. He was raised Roman Catholic, but in a “mixed home”—his father was Episcopalian. As he matured, his Catholicism was formed more fully by the Trappists, St. Francis and St. Clare of Assisi, and the Sisters of Saint Agnes. As a child he would go with neighborhood friends to the Chicago Buddhist Temple, which at the time was around the corner from his home, and down the street from the Catholic church he attended with his family.

He took lay ordination as a Zen Buddhist in 1995 under Roshi Richard Langlois of the Zen Buddhist Temple of Chicago. Ken also became familiar with Judaism by attending services occasionally with his godfather’s wife, who was Jewish. Later, he studied the Kabbalah with the Lubavitcher Rabbi Meir Chai Benhiyoun of the Chabad of the Loop, Gold Coast and Lincoln Park.

Coming from a Scottish family (on his father’s side) with several talented psychics going back several generations, Ken has always been comfortable with the intuitive dimension. He realized that Carl Jung’s teachings on the structure and dynamics of the psyche provided grounding and clarity on a personal level, and deep professional fulfillment as well. Always eager to learn new things and walk new paths, around ten years ago Ken found his way to the oldest spiritualist church in Chicago, The Church of the Spirit, where he now serves as an assistant pastor and medium.

Ken’s interest in near-death experiences stems from his practice. Over the past twenty-five years, he has worked with several analysands who were experiencers before they began analysis, and other analysands had near-death experiences during the time that they were doing their analytic work with him. Ken finds that Jung’s psychology lends itself to a deeper understanding of near-death phenomena, possibly because of Jung’s own near-death event. Ken is particularly interested in the relationship between near-death experiences, spirituality, Jung's archetypes of the collective unconscious, and the practice of consciousness in daily life.

Laura London

Laura London studied experimental psychology at the University of Washington and earned her undergraduate degree in neuropsychology from a private Jesuit university.

After working for many years in neurology, neuro-imaging, and nuclear medicine at University Hospitals of Cleveland and its VA psychiatric hospital, she left that scene and entered into a 17-year Jungian analysis sending her deeply into the work of Carl Gustav Jung. She attended a wide variety of lectures, workshops and seminars with notable Jungian analysts and authors, and worked closely with the Jung Association of Central Ohio and the C.G. Jung Center in Chicago.

In 2015, she created the podcast Speaking of Jung: Interviews with Jungian Analysts, which led her to Zürich, Switzerland to visit the places where Jung lived and worked. For the past five years she has interviewed over 50 certified Jungian analysts in an effort to bring the theories and applications of Jungian analysis to a wider segment of the public. As host and producer she has made every episode available to stream or download for free at speakingofjung.com, where you’ll also find a treasure trove of resources on Jung, his psychology, and the people who practice it.

Like the host stated, indeed, we miss you Richard! Best wishes:)

  2. Rod says:

Regarding the host’s statement about “What if it were revealed that we are not alone?”: it has been revealed. I think anyone who spends enough time researching the extant literature would conclude affirmatively as well. I think what she means to say is “What if the President of the United States revealed that we are not alone. Disclosure as a pending “event” is a poor means of answering this question. Waiting for someone else to tell you how something works is inherently childish. Moreover, such a means of discerning the world around you by taking for granted what others tells you is very, very dangerous.

  3. Rod says:

Power maintains power through manipulation in order to exploit. Those in power initiate such stories as faking the moon landings. Assuming we did land on the moon, creating confusion on this subject creates instability among those governed by those in power (e.g., fear and psychological instability). I say, assume, because I do not have firsthand knowledge that we did land. Nonetheless, it has been clearly shown that governments and its agencies (e.g., the CIA) routinely engage in psychological warfare. The moon landing hoax is one such instance. Richard Hoagland has shown that the moon landing hoax idea was engaged the very day our rocket was launched by NASA. This phenomenon has only grown since that time. The idea of disbelieving in things that seem self-evident has become a central, and destabilizing force with the rise of the World Wide Web. This technology  has provided the citizenry with the ability to discern what the powers that be do and how they do it. In response, the powers that be realized the best way to counter this democratizing force is to inject content into the system to create disbelief. Hence, the debunking groups like Flat Earthers and Moon Hoaxers.

  4. Rod says:

UAPs as a phenomenon are more than one thing. Jung’s perspectives have validity. And like virtually all informed opinions, his does not explain the totality of the subject at hand. It has been shown by well-educated and diligent researchers that objects in the sky are both man-made and other-made. I have found that humans prefer to find a single, unifying explanation for the world around us when this is likely not the case.
I think the guest host is mistaken when she states that “no one” has evidence or proof of ET/UFO/UAP visitations. There are people who have proof as a court of law considers such things. I’m sorry to say, it seems she and others are overgeneralizing when making such remarks. Asking “why” is not a valid question. Rather, asking “what” and “how” something has occurred regarding this phenomenon if far more probable to provide answers to this phenomenon. Why something happens in not really answerable to a human being. This phenomenon has a multi-millennial past and will likely continue as such. Our current civilization has had very, very little time to learn what and how the world around us really works. And, she’s correct. Most of use will pass on from this world without finding such answers.
