“The Second Space Race” ….

“The battle of the Billionaires!”

Anyway, that’s how the headlines have been portraying it ….

But, is that fair?

Thirteen days ago, Richard Branson, well-known British dare-devil billionaire — accompanied by three fellow passengers, and two pilots — rocketed fifty-five miles above the Land of Enchantment, just south of me here in New Mexico, in his uniquely-designed Burt Rutan Virgin Galactic “space plane” … before returning to an historic, graceful landing on the two-mile-long runway of “America’s Spaceport.”

Nine days later, Jeff Bezos, founder of Amazon, and his own space company, Blue Origin, in the company of three fellow “astronauts” — including the oldest, and the youngest, humans to ever ventured (if only for a few minutes …) 66.5 miles above west Texas, followed Branson and his Virgin Galactic passengers into the history books ….

The era of private enterprise “space tourism” had officially begun.

But, does this kind of “space-age barnstorming” really have a future?

Or is it, as the headlines claimed, only “a clash of egos — between Earth’s richest ‘0.001 percent?'”

Join me tonight — and my friend and colleague, space business expert, David Livingston — and find out.

“The Second Age of Space” has begun ….

Rchard C. Hoagland

Did I hear Richard say… “We live in a world where there are no secrets.” YES, yes I did. Ok now I know for a fact he does not live on this Earth and that would explain a lot, so what Planet does he really live on/come from? I too want to live on a Planet where there are no secrets.

    • MrBlack says:

I was in the middle of a rally race in Switzerland when I heard Richard say “We live in a world where there are no secrets.” I was so surprised I drove right off the road, did a double flip then I managed 5 end to end cartwheels. No, I didn’t win the race!

  2. Jay says:

With all due respect to your distinguished guest, I don’t think there is any cause for concern about marketing the flights and filling the seats.
Having spent time around young entitled techie Googloids who feel invulnerable to anything bad happening to them, I believe there will be more than enough of them to fill all available seats for the foreseeable future.
And how many seats are we talking about? a thousand a year, 10,000 a year? There are plenty of those people with the money and desire to fill all those seats.

  3. MrBlack says:

Well on the bad side I lost tonight’s pool. On the good side, Richard is present and accounted for. What will tomorrow bring? Tomorrow’s odds are 7-4 he will not appear. I had to lessen the odds this is eating my wallet. Ok, so much for my punny funny. ON WITH THE SHOW.

  4. MrBlack says:

Every Saturday and Sunday now I have an ongoing betting pool as to whether Richard will show up or not. Tonight’s odds are 10-2 against. Sometimes I win sometimes I lose. But we all lose when he is absent… well except for that one quark of his. Interrupting the guest 39.5 times every 19.5 minutes. Someone should look into that. It can not be a coinkidink?

  5. DKJ says:

Today I had a big laugh, a woman who was being interviewed on MSNBC said, “they need to change the shapes of rockets that the billionaires are making”. LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL!

  6. Jay says:

I think Vegas, or at least OSOM, should start posting an odds board on whether Mr. Hoagland will actually be able to do any given show. Just like a sporting event the odds can update continuously. Can also do parlays on combinations of dates, both shows on weekends, etc.
    Current odds handicapped:
    9-4 he makes Saturday,
    6-5 both days this weekend,
    2-6 next 5 in a row

    • MrBlack says:

      Add my odds too.
He does only one show a month over a 3 month period. I’ve already noted that as a past FACT! I’m betting he repeats that.
10-2 One show a month for 3 consecutive months. I’d almost be willing to put real money on that too, as a real bet? Almost.
