My guest tonight, historian Dr. Richard Spence, is asking a crucial question:

“Is America permanently divided?”

Regardless of whether we get our news from television, or all our information about the world comes from Facebook and Instagram, there is ONE thing on which we are agreeing:

The United States, in the second decade of the Twenty-First Century, seems hopelessly at odds with itself … on even basic “stuff” — like, did Biden really win the last election?

There is a much-cliched phrase–

“Those who do not learn from History … are condemned to repeat it.”

The quote is often attributed to 19th/20th Century Harvard philosopher, George Santayana — and in its original form read: “Those who cannot remember the past, are condemned to repeat it …”

See, even “history” doesn’t agree about the MOST basic stuff ….

Anyway, Dr. Spence’s thesis tonight — with some very vivid examples — is that “we’ve been here before … and we’ve survived. In fact, we’re BETTER for it ….”

Join us then … for some REAL “unknown” American History, that seems to be “repeating.”

    Dr. Hoagland,
I bought a copy of dark mission which arrived in the mail earlier today. I am reading chapter 3 about all the hanky-panky and flimflam by official sources.___________ I have to say that your clear-eyed seeing through that BS is in direct contrast to what I perceive as your not seeing through all the flimflam and hanky panky from official sources regarding covid.
    Yours Truly,
    Jay

Sorry for double posting, but while listening to the show another important thing for me came to mind in regards to the discussion. We always focus on individual sentences that people have said in a situation. But what often happens is that these sentences are taken out of context and transferred into the context of the respective narratives. This is how we get different interpretations of the same sentence. The actual meaning that the speaker actually had in mind falls by the wayside. So if you argue about a speech, it is best to go through the speech together so that both sides also have the same context.

  3. BastianNoffer says:

The problem nowadays is that the Internet makes all information manipulable and it takes a lot of effort (if it is possible at all) to find out that something has been changed.
Many people take Wikipedia for example as the absolute truth, but that the platform is maintained by people who also have an opinion and agenda is often forgotten. This is of course also true with regard to encyclopedias in book form, but once books are published and in the possession of many people they are no longer as easy to change as an encyclopedia entry in a database. At least when I was a student, our lecturers warned us not to take everything from Wikipedia as 100% trustworthy and I think that happens too little today.
Combine this trust in sources like Wikipedia with blogs, Youtube, etc. and you have the perfect mechanism to sell any story as truth.
So the question is what information can you trust? And unfortunately, most people don’t ask themselves this question.

  4. jay says:

to restate my other comment in simpler terms——- the big problem is that nobody trusts the media and unfortunately the media is untrustworthy. ——— I am no Donald Trump fan but I recognize that the media has had the ax out for him the last five years. Look at the endless Russiagate story. As somebody who considers himself a trutharian rather than a partisan, that tells me that I simply cannot trust a word they tell me about Donald Trump or the Jan 6 events.——- Walter Cronkite is gone and in his place we have Fox News and MSNBC.—————— as for the covid crisis, it seems there is a very substantial body of doctors and medical professionals who disagree with many aspects of what has happened and is happening but have been silenced, as far as I can tell because they would threaten Big Pharma profits. The news media has simply reported the official party line and what we have had is a massive effort to manufacture consent, rather than an honest reporting of all the differences of opinion in the medical and scientific communities. Why should I trust that, especially given how important Big Pharma advertising is to the media.——– Richard, in listening to you I hear that you basically trust the official stories. I have to respectfully say to you that I believe your trust is misplaced.

A good show tonight and I didn’t drive off the road in my Rally Stages because Richard didn’t say anything WACKO (from his own dimension/world) tonight. I did lose the bet AGAIN. I guess I will have to switch the odds to him actually showing up, but as soon as I do that he will not catch his interdimensional ride from (whatever world he lives on) and will be absent, and I will still lose the pool. I think I should cancel the pool now… yes? Anyway a very good show tonight. Looking forward to next Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. And a big 13+2=30 meows to K&A. ~MrBlack

More a question having to do with Journalism I suppose…
But do schools of journalism provide a coarse(s) having to do with, let’s say, the un-biased collection of facts for a factual news story.

Or, are journalists taught to strive to be unbiased and ‘fair’ in the reporting of the news?

Now you see why no one knows who I really am and there are no pictures or videos of the real me on the net. I treat the net like it’s a pick-pocket, basher, thief, abuser, and even a murder suspect… call Columbo to fumble to a conclusion and solve that one.
“Well, your honor, you see… it murdered the toaster with a byte by byte dissection using a logic probe, soldering gun, and a dismantled GPU with gravy stains. It’s guilty your Honor. I recommend electrocution… or a 10-pound hammer.”
      Case closed.
Sorry about the punnies, I can’t help myself.

  8. Jay says:

Regarding facts_____many people still consider it a fact that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction because that’s what the media reported______ aside from the people with the specialized scientific knowledge to really evaluate what they are told, for most people it becomes a question of how much do you trust the source telling you———-given the capture of the media by corporate and partisan interests,—–and given that the media has to a large extent abdicated all pretense of impartiality and investigative journalism and is basically repeating what they are told by official sources, many of whom have been captured by corporate and partisan interests——- it is not surprising that we are living in a Tower of Babel.—— every time I look beyond the headlines it looks like most of what we are told by the media is lies and distortions for the purpose of manufacturing consent

  9. Steve says:

In one of my history classes in college, the focus was on antiquarianism, which was a collection of historical on a topic.
Historians, go the extra step and make an analysis of those facts.

  10. MrBlack says:

Today’s ‘Richard live’ pool offers odds of just (3-1 he will NOT show up). Sorry but Richard is getting better at showing up lately; so, the odds are down a bit? Oh and the rally stage his surprising comment drove me off the road with… “We live in a world where there are no secrets.” I finished the race but lost that stage but, I was awarded a 5-star achievement award for 5 consecutive cartwheels, I got us out of the ditch we end up in, shook ourselves off, put on two bandaids, stapled one of my ears back on and continued to the end of the stage. Cost me thousands of cyber credits to repair the Festa M5. The whole time the mechanic was waving his finger at me scolding me for listening to ‘The other side of Midnight’ while on a rally stage. Anyway (3-1 is still not bad odds-place your bets before 9 pm when the airwaves and my next Race stage begins) (grins)
