Gene’s Items
Gene Perret has been a comedy writer since the early 1960’s working for comedians such as Slappy White and Phyllis Diller. He’s been a television comedy writer and producer since 1968. The Beautiful Phyllis Diller Show was his first television staff assignment. Gene has also worked as a writer on:
The Jim Nabors Show, Laugh-in, The New Bill Cosby Show, All In The Family, The Tim Conway Show, Three’s Company, The Carol Burnett Show, Mama’s Family, Love, American Style, and many others. As a television writer Perret has earned 7 Emmy nominations, and 2 Writer’s Guild Award nominations out of which he has captured 3 Emmy awards and a Writer’s Guild Award. Gene also teaches comedy writing through various avenues including email and has written over 30 books. Gene’s latest book Write Your Book…NOW! was named by The Writer Magazine of one of the top 10 Terrific books of 2011. This book provides readers with a system to help them finish the book they always wanted to write. Gene also has appeared as a guest on many television and radio shows promoting his books and in connection with his work with Bob Hope.
Gene has also worked on Bob Hope’s writing staff since 1969 and was his head writer for fifteen years until Mr. Hope’s retirement. In this capacity Gene wrote for all of Bob’s personal appearances and TV Specials. Gene was the only writer to travel with the Bob Hope troupe to the war zones of Beirut, the Persian Gulf, Saudi Arabia, and on a peace-time military jaunt around the world that featured stops at the Berlin Wall and in Moscow.
As a television writer Perret has earned 7 Emmy nominations, including one for original music, and 2 Writer’s Guild Award nominations. He has captured 3 Emmy awards and a Writer’s Guild Award.
Gene also teaches comedy writing through various avenues. He features several how-to articles each year in the comedy newsletter ROUND TABLE that he founded. He also teaches courses in comedy writing via e-mail.
