“Make America Great Again ….”
Restoring the S.S. United States!
Before there were true “spaceships” — like, Elon Musk’s imminent orbital “Starship,” soon to be plying the “space ways” of the Solar System — there was a much older ocean-going heritage … vessels that didn’t yet sail the vastness of President John F. Kennedy’s “New Ocean” — the infinite “seas” of outer space — but for centuries, plied the storm-tossed seas of just one planet … planet Earth.
And the finest of these — at the closing of the era of “great ocean-going ships, of our home planet” — was (in the eyes of many …) the last of the great passenger liners of all time … the famed “SS United States.”
She was the world’s fastest ocean liner ever built, not just a marvel of the technology of her era — the fabled “1950’s — she was a living icon of the “American Dream”; she represented, like no other American technological achievement until John Kennedy’s creation of Project Apollo, the power of freedom, of hard work, of common purpose … and, uniquely “American innovation” ….
Entirely Made in America, by over 3,000 pairs of tireless hands, and with products and components from every state in the nation — when America was THE “manufacturing nation” of the planet — the SS United States was a global ambassador and the pinnacle of mid-century maritime design. She debuted in 1952 as the most powerful, most modern, most advanced passenger liner ever built, smashing the transatlantic speed record on her maiden voyage (and, rumor had it, that she wasn’t even “allowed” on that voyage to be “really opened up,” lest her true capabilities be revealed to America’s enemies). For, behind her graceful lines and patriotic flair, she was also a “national security asset” — capable of being transformed into a state-of-the-art, top secret military vessel of the United States of America ….
The story of the SS United States is OUR story. It is the story of the nation’s triumphant emergence after the trauma of World War II. It’s also a story of the glamour of old Hollywood and the advent of mid-century modern art and design. It’s about people from small towns and big cities setting out on journeys to distant shores. It’s about immigrants crossing the sea, risking everything they had … to begin new lives HERE … to finding their own “American Dreams ….”
And now, after representing the best of the aspirations and achievements of our time … the SS United States is going to die a most ignominious death–
As an “artificial reef” — in a watery grave under the wave-tossed waters of the Gulf of Mexico ….
Unless–
We save her in time.

Secretary
Mary is the Founder and Executive Director of community based 501C3 nonprofit, QMI.
Established in 2012, QMI focuses on preserving the RMS Queen Mary and her history. Hailing from Long Beach, Mary's passion for history and ocean liners was sparked at an early age during visits to the Queen Mary with her father. Her great-grandfather was a US Navy Captain, and her grandmother worked as a riveter for McDonnell Douglas during WWII. History appreciation was a norm in her family. Regular visits to the Queen Mary and recognizing the need for community involvement led to the establishment of QMI. The foundation provides the global maritime community with a transparent platform for donations, regular updates on progress, and opportunities for involvement.
The historical connection between the SS United States and the Queen Mary has led to two onboard visits to the SS United States and its inclusion in two community QMI exhibits and events at the Queen Mary, all aimed at benefiting the SS United States. Mary has over 30 years of experience in marketing/Contracts management in the Fuel and alternative fuels industry.
She is dedicated to investing in the New York Coalition and supports the ethical and responsible preservation of the SS United States.
The designation of the ship on the National Register of Historic Places takes priority over economic interests. She believes that sinking history is unethical and all alternative opportunities should be considered.

Website: https://www.summerhill.bc.ca Winner of the prestigious Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award, the man at “Canada’s most visited winery” seems more a spiritual visionary than Wall Street hard-nose. When Stephen Cipes first visited the Okanagan in 1986, the New York developer believed he’d found unique conditions to produce “intensely flavoured small grapes”–the perfect base for sparkling wine. Cipes brought grape clones from France and “personally planted them on my hands and knees.” Summerhill follows organic growing practices. No herbicides or pesticides “keeps the lake clean and our grapes don’t taste from the chemicals,” says Cipes. “These grapes are happy guys, they’re flourishing. Our wines are allowing nature to speak for herself.” Summerhill wines are regularly honoured in international competitions. “We’ve won gold medals in France and the trophy for Best Bottle Fermented Sparkling Wine in London, England!” he beams. Philosophy of Business: “We love to be hosts. We want people to feel genuinely welcome in our home,” he says. “I try to empower my employees to exude that love. That’s ideal for what we do here. We’re welcoming people from around the world.” Cipes promotes from within and believes in being up-front. “I’m there for people,” he says. “I take phone calls. I put my money where my mouth is. I own the business in my own name and I put my name on the product.” Philosophy of Life: “Be whole unto yourself at all times,” the winemaker advises. “Allow your grand self to come through in your regular self.” Accomplishments: “My four sons are accomplished, fun-loving, warm-hearted people. That’s the best thing a dad could have.” Advice for Entrepreneurs: “You can’t focus on the monetary or material result. Be a conduit and allow your vision, your dream to come through — and fortify it every day.” How? “By taking every possible step to achieve your goal — like making sure there is toilet paper in the washrooms, the music is playing, the bottles are dusted and the chef has had his hug.”

A Turkish newspaper article about dismantling toxic ships. Apparently the United States was sent to Turkey in 1993 for “cleaning up” but rejected and sent back after protests of some environmental organizations.
After doing some more research I have come across this very nice article (in Turkish) about SS United States’ “adventures” in Turkey and Ukraine between 1992-1997.

Hello. Great to find this show streaming live tonight. Surprised to find the topic this morning is the proposed scuttling of an ocean liner. I suppose the ship could become a floating hotel or a floating museum if the hull remains intact and watertight, if not, hauling the huge hulk onto dry land would require a feat of engineering marvel to preserve the ship. Honestly, I had no idea about this story until I visited this website this weekend, so I feel like I may be too ignorant to leave a comment here today. Surprised to find somebody opposes the creation of a new reef in the Gulf when marine life is in peril. Creating a new artificial reef by recycling a ship could help save marine life.
