Did complex life originate on Earth … did any life “originate” on Earth!?

My guest tonight, Dr. Chandra Wickramasinghe, firmly believes that it did NOT.

His model (along with the late Fred Hoyle) is that “life” originated “a long, long time ago …and [maybe] even in a galaxy far, far away ….”

And, yes, that Octopi — so the best genetic evidence currently suggests —
did NOT evolve on Earth!

Join us … for a totally fresh look at “where did we [biology] REALLY come from ….”

Professor Chandra Wickramasinghe is an internationally acclaimed astronomer and one of the foremost pioneers of modern astrobiology. Chandra is famous for his pioneering studies on the carbonaceous nature of cosmic dust and the prevalence of extraterrestrial life. He is a recipient of several international awards and honorary doctorates and was a former Fellow of Jesus College, Cambridge and a Professor at Cardiff University for 40 years.

He is currently an Honorary Professor and Director of the Buckingham Centre for Astrobiology at the University of Buckingham, an Honorary Professor and Director of the University of Ruhuna Centre for Astrobiology Sri Lanka, Honorary Professor at the Sir John Kotelawala Defence University of Sri Lanka, Associate Professor the National Institute of Fundamental Studies, Sri Lanka.  He is also a founder member of the newly-formed Institute for the Study of Panspermia and Astro-economics in Gifu, Japan. He has written over 30 books and 300 scientific papers, over 60 of these being in the journal Nature.

In H.G. Welles’ 1897 sci-fi classic “War of the Worlds” the Earth is invaded by Martians in the form of blood sucking land octopi. They are only defeated by Earth’s germs, to which they have built up no immunity.

If panspermia means that germs all over the galaxy are generally similar, then we have lost our theoretical defence against Martian invaders. 😉 🙂

Wait! The Spanish flu that caused a global pandemic had simultaneous breakouts in Bombay and Boston??? A random viral mutation couldn’t happen that way because of the differences in climate and conditions, could they? Also, given the preponderance of viruses in the ocean water, could they be coming up from below instead of falling down from above? Maybe the black smokers at the bottom of the ocean are a possible source?

  6. AldenMoore says:

Dr. Wickramasinghe: I’m wondering why the cosmic radiation which severely limits the lifespan of the viruses we find on the ocean’s surface doesn’t kill them all before they even “fall down” to the surface? Is the reason we are seeing so many viruses on the ocean’s surface here due to a random element or could they have been directed here deliberately?

  7. Ayn Ran says:

“What is meant by “the supernatural”? Supposedly, a realm that transcends nature. What is nature? Nature is existence—the sum of that which is. It is usually called “nature” when we think of it as a system of interconnected, interacting entities governed by law. So “nature” really means the universe of entities acting and interacting in accordance with their identities. What, then, is “super-nature”? Something beyond the universe, beyond entities, beyond identity. It would have to be: a form of existence beyond existence—a kind of entity beyond anything man knows about entities—a something which contradicts everything man knows about the identity of that which is. In short, a contradiction of every metaphysical essential.”

    —Leonard Piekoff

“They claim that they perceive a mode of being superior to your existence on this earth. The mystics of spirit call it “another dimension,” which consists of denying dimensions. The mystics of muscle call it “the future,” which consists of denying the present. To exist is to possess identity. What identity are they able to give to their superior realm? They keep telling you what it is not, but never tell you what it is. All their identifications consist of negating: God is that which no human mind can know, they say—and proceed to demand that you consider it knowledge—God is non-man, heaven is non-earth, soul is non-body, virtue is non-profit, A is non-A, perception is non-sensory, knowledge is non-reason. Their definitions are not acts of defining, but of wiping out.”
